Bizarre it may sound, but the newly-wed brides are put to a chastity test in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district. They are welcomed if they pass the test, else a regressive practice is unleashed. To prove that she is virgin, the bride is forced to undergo a test on her wedding night. The outrageous custom is called Kukri. The boy and the girl are made to sleep at one place for sex while some girls, generally the boy's sisters-in-law, sit outside. After half an hour it is checked whether bleeding has happened because of sex. If bleeding has happened, then it is alright. If not, then it means that the girl had a relationship with someone earlier. The bride's horror doesn't end here. Based on the result, the groom's family then decides the fate of the bride. If she fails the hymen test, it leads to Jhagda, another ritual that defies all basic civility.
Jhagda is performed between the families of bride and the groom where they fight with each other while deciding the future of the girl. If both parties fail to reach an agreement, then the matter reaches panchayat. In many cases, the girl is abused, socially boycotted and even fined by the panchayat. Her wedding turns into a nightmare and she is punished for "committing the crime".
This tradition should stop right here. This test should not be taken for girl. It is wrong. Even the elders of the village take pride in this chauvinistic act...

I was terrified when I happened to hear this in a leading news channel. This incident has happened just before 2 days...
This act is totally ridiculous, because
1) It is not necessary that when hymen is broken you would shed lots of blood. Sometimes hymen can get broken with very little or no blood.
2) Apart from sex, Hymen can get broken due to aggressive sports or horse riding etc.
3) Sometimes hymen has to be removed in certain gynecological procedures even though the girl may not have sex.

If it is for testing bride's virgin, why not even for bridegrooms...??
A suitable legal action should be taken against the concerned persons for causing humiliation to the young brides.
