Importance of an MBA degree

I always wanted to do an MBA, but don't really have an idea of its prerequisites. Today, I came across an article in Hindu about the expectations of students(management school) from an MBA degree. It is shocking that most of them had said that their aim is to enhance communication and interpersonal skills, improve language skills and so on. No doubt that MBA will enhance these skills, but that is not the real objective of this degree. If students really wanted to improve their communication skills, there are many less expensive courses in the offing other than MBA.

This indicates that students do very little analysis before they choose their respective streams of study. Only students with real MBA skills can make it to big league.

The real question is why do they need it.This degree actually exists because the job market needs people with sound knowledge in Scientific Management approaches. So a holistic perspective with a strong liking towards running a business venture is a prerequisite for the course. The industry expects people with an MBA degree to have knowledge on basic tenets of finance, accounting, marketing, sales and statistical analysis.

So students who join an MBA programme have to understand the core competencies and that soft skills will not propel them to a higher orbit unless they possess the hard skills.

Rightly said...getting an MBA can be be child's play now-a-days...but getting into the big league requires the a lot of dedication with unflagging zeal and entrepreneurial spirit of mind...these hard skills can only be thought in the school of life

I dont agree! There are cases where soft skills have trumped over knowledgeable skills. When someone one has both equally good, then they can move right into the big league. But having said that, not always having only soft skills can some one can climb ladders and at the same time, people have climbed up to the top with only soft skills.

Yes true, thats not something that you should expect from an MBA degree but yeah, they form a key part. i was just arguing that following your lines...
